Laurent Kaiser graduated from the Geneva faculty of medicine and specialised in internal medicine and infectious diseases at the Geneva University Hospital. He was an associate researcher on respiratory viruses at the division of epidemiology and virology of Charlottesville, USA. He is today consultant physician in infectious diseases, medical officer at the Central Virological Laboratory and is also in charge of supervising the consultations service for AIDS and infectious diseases.

He carried out research evaluating the role of antibiotics in the treatment of infections of the upper air passages; he has also completed several research projects on HIV. His most recent work involves clinical virology and he has published a number of articles on the impact of new anti-viral drugs on the treatment of influenza. As a member of the Central virological laboratory , he is conducting research aimed at improving clinical care for viral diseases, and is working on the validation of new diagnostic tools in clinical virology, including those for respiratory viruses (especially SARS and influenza) and cytomegaloviruses.
